In a shower or wet floor, the tile is a wear surface — the waterproofing behind it is what keeps your framing dry. We install a continuous membrane across walls, pan, corners, and penetrations, then verify it before a single tile is set. This is exactly where a cheap bid economizes, and it is why three-year-old showers start smelling musty and dropping tiles.
Large-format tile is a flatness problem
A 24x48 panel will not hide a wavy wall the way a 3x6 subway tile does; it telegraphs every high spot as lippage. Before large-format goes up we flatten the substrate, dry-lay the layout, and back-butter for full coverage. Fewer grout lines is the reason people choose the format — getting there takes prep, not luck.
Layout decided on paper, not on the wall
Where the first full tile lands decides where the slivers end up. We plan the layout against sightlines, niches, corners, and fixture centers before we mix a bucket, so cuts fall in the least visible places and grout lines carry across from floor to wall where they should.

- Is large-format tile a good idea in a small bathroom?
- Often yes: fewer grout lines make a small room read larger and cut cleaning. The requirement is a flat substrate, which we build before the tile goes up.
- Can you tile over my existing tile?
- In dry areas it is sometimes viable. In showers and wet floors we take it back to a sound, waterproofed substrate — tiling over an unknown waterproofing layer is how failures get buried.
